You should get an inspection when:

You’re making a new home purchase

When you’re looking at buying a new home, it’s essential to have everything checked out to be sure that it’s a safe and up-to-date dwelling for you and your family to enjoy for years to come. In many ways, the electrical system is the “central nervous system” of your house, as it controls so many of the elements that make a house a home. Your HVAC, your appliances, your indoor/outdoor lighting and even your home entertainment center depend on a reliable electrical system.

You’re updating an older home

Houses that are over 40 years old should definitely be inspected. Not only is there ordinary wear and tear to check for, your wiring, fuse boxes, circuit breakers and outlets could be outdated and should be upgraded to accommodate today’s electrical needs. Home computers, large entertainment centers and other appliances require more power, delivered more efficiently.

There’s been a big storm

If a lightning strike has caused your electrical outlets to smoke, obviously you would have it checked out immediately, but people don’t necessarily react to the damage they can’t see due to power surges. After a storm, if your fuses have tripped or appliances are behaving oddly, it’s possible that your wiring has been compromised. We’ll test it to make sure it’s safe and advise for repairs if needed.

When you upgrade appliances

Washing machines, dryers, refrigerators, freezers and HVAC units are all big consumers of power. When you plan a big upgrade, make sure an electrical inspection is part of the plan to assure that your electrical system can handle it. It also makes sense because we may be able to help with ways for you to save energy — and money — on these power-guzzlers.

What does the inspection entail?

Electrical systems can become worn-out and obsolete, so an inspection is key to scoping out any areas with faulty or outmoded equipment, damage and other hazards. Following a comprehensive checklist, we examine those areas and we let you know what needs to be repaired. Many times, a small defect can be caught before it becomes a bigger, more hazardous and costly problem.
